‘Festival Finale’:
‘Norma’ the Dunedin Town Hall organ. Sunday 30 June at 2pm at Dunedin Town Hall.
Dunedin’s City Organist David Burchell, and young players Max Toth and Micah Xiang will explore the many musical moods of ‘Norma’ the Dunedin Town Hall organ. The music comes from four centuries, from J.S. Bach to Naji Hakim via César Franck, Charles-Marie Widor, Percy Whitlock and NZ’s John Wells.
Installed in the Town Hall in 1929, ‘Norma’ is a rare surviving example of an early twentieth-century symphonic organ in which conventional organ sounds are combined with orchestral tone colours and percussion. Few instruments have survived tonally unaltered from this period of organ building, and Dunedin is fortunate to have such a fine instrument as part of the magnificent Town Hall.
Admission by donation (cash only!) at the door.
