History
This impressive building overlooking the Octagon is the second St Paul’s on the site, the first being
opened in 1863. In 1894 St Paul’s church became the Cathedral. In 1904 a substantial bequest was
given as a nucleus for funds to build a Cathedral; building began in 1915 and was consecrated in
1919. The second stage of the Cathedral, the apsidal chancel, was designed by Mr E.J. McCoy in
1968, and was consecrated July 1971.
The first organ was a 3 stop barrel organ given to the church by a Dr. Richardson in 1851, (this organ
is on display at the Toitu Early Settlers Museum). The second organ was built by Telford and Telford
(this instrument is owned by David Burchell). A new larger instrument was wanted for the new
Cathedral, this was ordered from Henry Willis & Co and was opened in 1921. At the time the organ
was considered as having too many solo stops. With the new chancel being built the organ was
dismantled and rebuilt to its present position as a 4 manual instrument. In 2020 a fire in the roof of
the chancel caused considerable damage to the chancel, however the organ was restored and a new
movable 4 Manual console was fitted.
