The Organ
The organ in St Matthew’s is unique in that the organ is divided on either side of the chancel. This 3
Manual and Pedal organ was originally fitted with tracker action, some of the trackers were over 50
feet long going under the chancel floor. The instrument was built by Bevington and Son in 1879 and
installed by Mr. E.H. Jenkins in 1880. Over the years the mechanical action became very heavy and
needed attention. A bequest was given to the church stipulating it was for rebuilding the organ
which happened in 1969-1970. At that time a new console was installed in the north case and
electric action was fitted. The sound of this instrument is magnificent and many people enjoy
playing it.
