Dunedin's Knox College was opened in 1909 as a theological hall for the training of Presbyterian ministers and a residential college for university students Ross Chapel was dedicated on 8 June 1913. In the chapel are war memorials to former students who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. They include a three-panel stained-glass window which was dedicated to 27 former students who had lost their lives during the First World War. The window was dedicated on Anzac Day 1923.
In 2001 the Chapel was remodelled with terraced seating facing each other. The organ, a two-rank extension organ, was built by George Croft & Son in 1965. It is totally enclosed except for the Bourdon. The pipes are visible because of the glass Swell shutters. The instrument has electric action and its tone is bright and clear, the surroundings make this organ ideal for services in the Chapel and other events.
